Championship grounds quiz.

Club football’s last international break of the season gives me a chance to resurrect an old favourite (is favourite the right word?) , the grounds quiz. For those unfamiliar with these gloriously popular quizzes, the format is very simple – you have to identify the clubs which play at the ground shown in a photograph, the problem comes from some of those photos being one or more of the following, very old, obscure or, occasionally, misleading.

In this case, there are twenty four photos, one for every club in this season’s Championship – they will be of the club’s current stadium or a former ground of theirs and where I feel it is required, I will give a written clue which will, hopefully, help in identification – I’ll post the answers sometime on the weekend.

4.

5. This photo is believed to be from 1937 and the club concerned still play at this ground – they played there on Saturday in front of more than 20,000.

6.

7.

8. Another ground that is still in use – we’ve been regular visitors down the years.

9.

10.

11.

12. Another ground still in use – I think that the terrace pictured, which no longer exists, housed the cameras in the early days of televised football.

13.

14.

15. The club concerned celebrated their centenary of playing at this ground in 2022, we won there this season.

16. This photo shows the result of fire damage, the club concerned played at the ground in question for another seventy two years.

17.

18. Think those old enough to remember this stadium will find this one pretty easy, if anyone younger than that is doing this quiz, then I’m pretty sure you would have heard of the club legend who scored the last goal at the ground.

19. This photo is ninety six years old and it’s of a ground that is still in use today – it was in use last Saturday in fact.

20.

21. Some may regard this one as something of a catch question.

22. The most famous ground out of the twenty four I’d say.

23.

24. Another one that might be seen as a catch question to finish.

Back in 1977, after initially kicking them out of the competition, UEFA relented and ordered that the second leg of Manchester United’s Cup Winners’ Cup tie with St. Ettiene be played more than 200 miles away from Manchester after their supporters rioted in the first leg in France. It was decided that the match would be played at Home Park, Plymouth and a capacity crowd of 31,000 watched a “home win” by 2-0 that took United through on an aggregate score of 3-1.
  22.  Hillsborough, Sheffield Wednesday.
  23. Ashton Gate, Bristol City – I stood on that terrace watching us lose too many times for comfort (we did draw once though!).
  24. Leeds United players inspect fire damage at their Elland Road ground in 1956 – they played in blue shirts with yellow trim back in those days.
