Six decades of Cardiff City v Newcastle United matches.

Six Newcastle United related questions which I’ll post the answers to on Saturday morning.

60s. He scored on his Newcastle debut on Christmas Day 1950 in a game against Middlesbrough, but only managed three more in the near three hundred appearances he made for the Geordies before leaving for a shaky team in white ten years later – most people remember him now for a triumph at Wembley, but can you name him?

70s. Described by one of his Newcastle managers Joe Harvey as that club’s version of Paul Madeley (the recently deceased Madeley was nicknamed the Rolls Royce at Leeds), the player below was in a Magpies team beaten by City during this decade. who is he?

80s. Name the City player, signed for a six figure fee, who made his home debut for the club in a heavy defeat by Newcastle during this decade.

90s. Which Newcastle midfielder from this decade has two sons who played for the same League Two club last season?

00s. Making his senior debut against some Magpies while on loan at a team managed by Tony Adams. this Londoner, who was a striker as a schoolboy, became a regular at the other end of the pitch in the Newcastle side for a decade or so. Since leaving the club he has played in America, East Anglia and was a regular starter for some blue bloods in League One last season – last month he signed for a club on the other side of the world, but can you name him?

10s. Who is this scorer for Newcastle against us during this decade?

Answers.

60s. Bob Stokoe, manager of the Sunderland team which beat Leeds in the 1973 FA Cup Final.

70s. Irving Nattrass.

80s. Dave Bennett’s first game at Ninian Park saw us beaten 4-0 by Newcastle on 3 October 1981.

90s. Rob Lee’s sons Olly and Elliot were both members of the Luton team which was promoted to League One last season – Olly moved north to Hearts during the summer.

00s. Currently playing for Wellington Phoenix in New Zealand, Steven Taylor has played for Wycombe, Portland Timbers, Ipswich and Peterborough besides Newcastle.

    Paul,
I never was any good at quizzes and can only answer one of your questions. How pathetic am I…?!
I write this, hoping that the City will perform better than me today…!!
And just for the record, my talents as a judge of a footballer also came crashing down last night.
I watched the whole of the Birmingham v Swansea game on SKY. And I have to say that my two golden boys McKay and McBurnie were both pitifully bad. (Though fortunately for my reputation as a seer, Omar Bogle was no better…!!)

  2. The other Bob Wilson says:

I only watched the first half of last night’s match Dai, but, from what I saw, Swansea were, as I thought they might be, too lightweight and passive for a division like the Championship. I don’t claim any great credit for that because it seems so obvious really. Seven points from three matches is a good start by any standards, but Graham Potter’s reputation as a young coach/manager with a big future will be given a huge boost if he can steer last night’s Swansea squad to a top six finish – I suspect there will be some loan signings to improve the squad’s physicality before the end of the month and the fit again Leroy Fer will be used more often. I think McBurnie is a talent who will prove himself over the course of the season and someone like McKay needs more protection from team mates if he is going to be able to parade his undoubted skills to best advantage – as for Bogle, I agree with you, plenty of endeavour, but little in the way of inspiration.
