Two visits to promotion chasing sides in the week ahead as City look to snap out of a run of three defeats in four – with nothing for us to play for, this may be easier said than done.
The usual seven questions on our next opponents with the answers to be posted on here on Sunday.
60s. This Derbyshire born forward spent most of his career in stripes and it might have been even more if he had joined his first professional club at a different time in their history. Instead, he wore a kit thats colour became the club’s nickname. He arrived at Sheffield United towards the end of this decade and was on the losing side in his first visit to Cardiff with them, but did better in his second, and final, outing for the Blades here when he was used as a defender. His next move took him to a club that won three cup competitions while he was there, but a move south to the midlands went less well and, after scoring twice on his debut, only one more goal followed in the next twenty nine league matches he played for a team on its way to relegation. Moving abroad to play for Belgian buffaloes, he wound down his career by returning to England to play for a team which wore the same colours and were very close geographically to the side he was probably at his best with, but the similarities ended there because he was now playing non league football – who is he?
70s. The biggest away win in the Second Division in 77/78 was 6-1 by Sheffield United at Ninian Park. How many away goals did they score in their other twenty league fixtures that season?
80s. Strongly linked with City early in his career, this winger from the north east spent sixteen years in the game and then his son followed him in playing for Sheffield United. He began on the claret, but couldn’t establish himself there and it was when he developed a taste for jellied eels and kiss me quick hats (sorry about that!) further south that he began to be noticed by other clubs. When the inevitable move came, it was to another venue where his kiss me quick hat would have been appropriate. Moving from red rose to white when joining Sheffield United, he had seven years there which generally saw the club on an upward trajectory after some of the darkest days of their existence. When he moved on it was north east to another coastal holiday venue before he finished his pilgrimage wearing yellow/amber – who am I describing?
90s. Sad fondler heads east and becomes winner against City during this decade (3,8)
00s. A boyhood Sheffield Wednesday fan, this sixty one times capped by his country holder of a Champions League winner’s medal and twice a Europe League winner, played for Sheffield United against City during this decade and also has appeared at Cardiff City Stadium this season for one of our opponents, who is he?
10s. He was in Sheffield United’s team the last time we played there and was nominated as man of the match when his team reached a Cup Final last weekend, who?
20s. What unwanted Sheffield United related record does Fraser Forster hold this season?
Answers.
60s. John Tudor began his career with Coventry City before signing for Sheffield United in 1968. He was in their side that was beaten 4-1 at Ninian Park in the 68/69 season, but did better when playing as an extra defender in a 1-1 draw at the beginning of the 70/71 season. Todor moved to Newcastle a few months later and was in the teams which won the Anglo Italian and two Texaco Cups. A move to Stoke did not work out for Tudor though and he played for K.A.A. Gent for a couple of years before a spell at Gateshead.
70s. Fourteen.
80s. City were reportedly close to signing Colin Morris (whose son Lee also played for Sheffield United) in the late seventies when he was a Southend player. He’d joined them from Burnley and eventually headed back in the same direction when signing for Blackpool. Morris was at Sheffield United between 1981 and 1988 and had spells with Scarborough and Boston after leaving them.
90s. Lee Sandford was in the Sheffield United side which beat City 4-1 in a Fourth Round FA Cup tie in January 1999.
00s. Gary Cahill was in the Sheffield United team which drew 3-3 with City at Bramall Lane in October 2007 and in the Bournemouth side which won 1-0 here last September.
10s. John Lundstram was in the Sheffield United team which drew 1-1 with City in April 2018 and was the BBC’s man of the match when Rangers beat Celtic 2-1 in the Semi Final of the Scottish Cup last weekend.
20s. He’s the only goalkeeper in senior football Cardiff City fans’ hate figure Oli McBurnie has scored against this season – McBurnie’s sole goal of the 21/22 season came against Southampton in an EFL Cup tie in September and there was confirmation this week that he will miss the rest of the season through injury.
