A Good Friday visit to the side we faced in Steve Morison’s first home match in charge coming up. Hull won at Cardiff City Stadium in a manner that was fairly typical at the time – score pretty early, then hold out against what was usually feeble attacking. However, the last two seasons have shown City to be much more effective away than they are at home and a few of the sides who won here quite comfortably in the first half of the season have been prevented from completing a double in recent months – can we do the same at Hull?
Here’s the usual seven questions on our next opponent covering each decade since the 60s, I’ll post the answers on here on Saturday.
60s. Despite breaking his leg three times, this full back/ defender played over five hundred league games for Hull (something no one else has does), who is he and why is he unique in the history of Cardiff City v Hull City matches during this decade?
70s. Definitely not a Mexican, which goalscorer for Hull against us during this decade was, briefly, manager of West Brom?
80s. Did he shine for Dai when he played against City in this decade? (4,7)
90s. What is the connection between Sidney Poitier, Lulu, Judy Geeson and a City matchwinner in a game at Hull during this decade? I don’t expect anyone to know this without looking it up!
00s. Aaron Ramsey famously became City’s youngest ever debutante when he came on as a sub in a match with Hull City during this decade, who did he come on for?
10s. During his career, he scored a record setting hat trick against Cardiff City and another one against Winterton Rovers, he cost Hull over a million pound when he left his first club and once lost out on a Championship Player of the month award to Danny Graham. He also played for Hull against us three times (plus one appearance as a sub) in this decade and was never on the winning side. Who is he?
20s. Possibly a cat on a hot tin roof among the Hull squad?
Answers
60s. Andy (Jock) Davidson was the only player on either side to appear in both of the first two meetings between the clubs in the sixties – City won the first one, by 3-2 at Ninian Park in February 1960 and Davidson was also part of the Hull side that won 4-2 on the same ground in October 1966.
70s. England international, Stuart “Pancho” Pearson scored Hull’s goal in a 1-1 draw at Ninian Park in August 1971 and, twenty years later, he was appointed caretaker manager at West Brom for six matches following the departure of Brian Talbot.
80s. Iain Hesford.
90s. Sidney Poitier, Lulu and Judy Geeson were all in the 1967 film To Sir with Love which also featured an actor called Christian Roberts who was the “rebellious one” in the class Poitier was teaching – Christian Roberts also scored the only goal of the game for City in their win at Boothferry Park in March 1998.
00s. Aaron Ramsey replaced Paul Parry in the 90th minute of a 1-0 home defeat by Hull in April 2007.
10s. Jay Simpson became the first player to score a hat trick at the new Emirates Stadium when he scored all three goals for Arsenal’s youth team in their 3-2 win over City in the Quarter Final of the 2007 FA Youth Cup. Three years later, Simpson signed for Hull and came on as a sub in their 2-0 loss at Cardiff City Stadium in September 2010 and started in their loss by the same score five months later. Simpson also started in the 2-1 away defeat by us and the 2-2 home draw which clinched promotion for Hull during the 12/13 season.
20s. Tom Eaves.
