Hii Paul, thanks for your reporting over the Summer. Despite the dearth of comings and goings (and for me that has actually been a refreshing change), your weekly pieces have always been entertaining and insightful – which is more than I can say for the local papers!
I can’t say I’m surprised to see Marshy almost out the door. The guy is a top class keeper who belongs in a top class league. I’m happy he’s lasted this long with us to be honest. If as expected he does leave, I think he will go with the best wishes of the vast majority of City fans. ALF is a different story. Really not sure what the problem was there, but he just never got to grips with life in a Cardiff shirt, which is strange, given his record at a variety of clubs. And on Guerra, I saw him play twice (was that every appearance?). Once against Middlesbrough, as substitute and once v Bournemouth. The latter was the game in which he was withdrawn after 30 minutes and showed the reasons he has been I fancied. The first game as sub though, I thought we had uncovered a gem. His touch was sublime and remind me of Berbatov (or the first time I saw Leon Jeanne, remember him?). Like Berbatov, however, work ethic is not part of the make up. I wonder had we stayed in the Premier League, where the game seems more methodical, we may have seen a different player?
I’ll be sad to see Kenwyne leave, should he go. I’ve a lot of friends in Trinidad, having lived there for a few years and his performances are often the spark for a good bit of banter. He can be a force of nature on his day and a weapon we shouldn’t give lightly to a Championship rival.
Finally, lovely to see Andy Malloy get in touch. Getting such feedback must make the effort you put into this blog all the more rewarding.
Here’s to a successful (and if not, entertaining) season. Looking forward to some good back and forth with the regulars!
    Matt

Morning Matt, great to hear from you again. I’m going to be boring here and say I agree with virtually every word you say!
There’s little I can add to what you say about Marshall and LeFondre, but, I will say a bit more about Guerra and Jones.
I was very critical of Guerra after that Bournemouth match, but, you are right, he was just about the only good thing about the Middlesbrough match – I can also remember him doing well when he came on against Huddersfield in our first home game of the league season.
It’s an interesting point you make about him possibly being more suited to the Premier League – certainly, based on what I saw, he may have found it hard in the hurly burly of the Championship every week.
As for Kenwyne, while it wouldn’t surprise me one bit if he did really well if he returned to Sheffield Wednesday, it’s that huge wage packet that influences my thinking about him most – even if the club taking him on loan were only paying half of his wages, I’d still say it would be worth letting him go.
Yes, it is very rewarding personally when relatives of former City players get in touch – it’s happened once or twice before. Another City player of the early sixties, Tony Pickrell, allowed me to publish a few of his recollections from his City career and a cartoon of players from that era he had drawn

Anyone here have any interest in doing a quick Q&A before the Fulham/Cardiff match this weekend?

  4. The other Bob Wilson says:

I did a couple for you last season didn’t I Andrew? Sorry, I’ve not real;y got the time at the moment – would anyone else like to do it?

  5. Dai Woosnam says:

Oh Paul…this is truly the game that keeps on giving…
The new season has started off delightfully with yesterday’s news.
    WHAT news?
The news that Mason has the 10 shirt, and Ralls the 8 ???!!!
    Hardly…
Crazy squad numbering has made the number on a player’s back as irrelevant as the blush on a dead man’s cheek.
    No…
What I refer to is the great news from Romania last night that the scoundrel Bilic is out of the Europa League before the EPL season has even kicked off !!!
Now, West Ham United…please make my day and go from weakness to weakness and please get relegated. And start season 16-17 as a CHAMPIONSHIP team in the Olympic Stadium …a home that our taxes have provided you, for not much more than a peppercorn rent (when considering that you are awash with SKY money).
    Schadenfreude?
    You bet.
    With a capital S.
    Kindest,
    Dai.

  6. The other Bob Wilson says:

Funnily enough Dai, I thought of you when I saw that result – given their struggles against that Maltese side in the last round, either West Ham didn’t take the competition seriously or they are in for a long, hard season.
Actually, I answered West Ham when asked to pick a shock team to struggle against relegation this year – they ended last season so awfully and I think a few of the players who made a big impact in their first season with the club will be found out/won’t be as bothered this time around.
