Apart from a new central defender we are desperately in need of quality cover at full back. So often last season we were exposed down the flanks -right and left where the so called defenders seemed unable to prevent crosses reigning in
Hi Bob,
I too am not confident about our chances next season. I think we have a pretty good squad of players, but I think we seem a little naive in terms of our tactical capabilities and drive from the touch line? I hope I’m wrong!
Tan’s Folly……brilliant!!
Mike
Thank you James and Mike for your replies. I share your misgivings, but, fair play, that was a good win yesterday after an unfortunate start which saw injuries to two important players. With Cala suspended and Turner possibly missing for the Blackburn game, I wonder if we’ll be on the look out for a new centreback sooner rather than later – with both Fonte and Keane not being available for a while, maybe we’ll see City try and sign someone for a month? On the other hand, Matt Connolly sent out a reminder yesterday that he is still around and I reckon he’s a quality defender at this level, Brayford and Theophile-Catherine can both play in the middle and we could even use Gary Medel there if his transfer takes a while to sort out.
Hello Paul,
You mentioning Cala there, makes me realise that I forgot him completely in my note to you on last week’s article.

Apols. But put it down to advancing age. I honestly cannot tell you what I had for dinner last night.
But if I made a howler there by forgetting Cala was on the payroll, it is nothing to the frankly bizarre piece Terry Phillips has posted on the greatest 50 City players EVER.
http://www.walesonline.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/50-greatest-cardiff-city-players-7520090
I have just written this:
‘…
I echo all that Wayne Smith says here.
I have long known that Terry Phillips will never make a Brian Glanville or a Hugh McIlvanny in a hundred years. But even by his derisory low standards, this is a particularly cretinous article.
I would have Adrian Alston and Robin Friday before the gutless Chopra and Bothroyd. But I guess that is debatable to some.
Look, we all know that one man’s floor is another man’s ceiling. Ergo, it is a given that everyone’s list will differ.
To have John Charles at 17 is a joke. He is a clear top 10. Unlike Fowler who also came to Cardiff aged 32, JC was not washed up, but still IMPERIOUS.
But Mr P here betrays the fact that he never came to watch City till he got posted to Thomson House 20 or so years ago. Had he grown up watching City, he would have known that in third place would come the great Steve Gammon whose brilliant career was ended by that wild tackle from Denis Law. In second place should be the sublime Graham Moore, who City sold for a club record fee to Chelsea when Tommy Doc bought him as a replacement for Jimmy Greaves who had just gone to AC Milan for a then world record fee. Pretty soon Matt Busby signed him to join Law and Charlton at Old Trafford. Both those managers knew footballing greatness a mile off.
And in first place? Easy. The great Danny Malloy. He would make TEN Don Murrays…though Don was indeed a stalwart servant.
Not to have any of those three players in his top fifty, identifies Terry Phillips as a total dunce.
…’
Kindest,
Dai.
Can’t really comment on your first four Dai. I saw John Charles play a few times and I’m fairly sure I would have seen Steve Gammon play somewhere along the line, but it would have been after his injury. As for Graham Moore, I saw him play for Wales in the last 60’s and wasn’t too impressed, while I never saw Danny Malloy play for us. The first side to make a strong impression on me was the one which reached the Semi Final of the Cup Winner’s Cup and I’m surprised that Peter King, Barrie Jones and, Jimmy Scoular’s best signing, Brian Harris weren’t included – Ian Gibson from a few years later is a startling omission as well.
You mention Adrian Alston, I’d also include Tony Evans who formed a partnership which got City promoted and there’s no mention either of Jeff Hemmerman whose goals played such a part in getting us promoted in 82/83 – those three deserve a place more than Leo, Phil Stant and, one of my personal favourites, Carl Dale in my book.
