Good to see Healey returning to scoring form. I remember seeing him with Connah’s Quay and thinking he was an outstanding prospect but my cynicism about our manager’s attitude to youth makes me wonder how long he can maintain his enthusiasm.
The Josh Yorwerth case has been mentioned previously but I noticed today that Newport’s 17 year old Regan Poole is going to Man Utd for a sum which could reach £400,000 – another young player who was shrewdly released by our Club! (Who makes these decisions?) Deji Oshilaja has also been mentioned on here previously and last Saturday he scored again on loan for Gillingham, has apparently been outstanding and hasn’t missed a minute of the season so far. I think it’s demoralising for some of our young players to think they probably won’t even feature on the first team bench occasionally even if it was only to give them a taste of the atmosphere.
I used to watch the Development team fairly regularly and enjoyed trying to spot future stars but I’ve wondered this season if there’s any point because of Russell Slade’s unfathomable policy of bringing presumably more expensive cover players in from elsewhere rather than encouraging our own.

Hello Clive – got to tell you that you’re preaching to the converted with me when it comes to youth development at the club. I can’t get too critical about Regan Poole because I’m pretty sure I’ve never seen him play (if I have done, it almost certainly would have been when I would have wandered over to watch the Under 16s for a few minutes when I was at an Academy match), but it’s got to be embarrassing for the club that one of our “rejects” has got himself such a high profile move so soon after we released him.
Going to play in the SPL has to be a good move for Rhys Healey because every thing you’ve seen about this manager so far tells you that Rhys could be scoring at the rate of five every three matches for a few months for the Under 21s, but it wouldn’t do him any good as far as first team recognition was concerned. The Under 21s have been playing some good stuff so far, but I remember that when Rhys went out on loan to Colchester last autumn, they simply stopped scoring after that and there’s no one obvious to replace him – Eli Phipps was a prolific goalscorer for the Academy side last season and I believe he’s too old to play for them now, so he’d be the most likely candidate I’d say if we were going to keep with the policy of using younger players, but I assume he’s injured at the moment, because, as far as I know, he’s not been involved at all this season.
