(1) Why does Alex Revell not get a game?
(2) When Russell Slade read the Observer’s Book on Football Management, had someone removed the pages on defending from the front?
My only quarrel with your assessment is your optimistic hope of ten to fifteen premier league standard performances from Kenwynne.Apart from his set piece defending in the near post area his good performances are becoming collectors items.I think that his supporters in the media especially Blakeys bootroom have been seeing the Emperors clothes for some time now.On the subject of our younger players as you are one of the few supporters to watch him regularly do you think that Declan John is ready for a place on the bench as cover for both full back and wing positions?
Would disagree on his signings :
The two full backs look decent and have sparked Fabio into life.
Doyle was worth a punt considering his lower league goal scoring record , has suffered from Masons form.
Revell is a hard worker that could add value from the bench ,however we have Sammy now.
Sammy was a good loan signing .
O’keefe not a great signing.
Kennedy looked a great skilful signing ,something has gone wrong I think internally I think ??
Comparing this with previous manager signings I don’t think he’s not performed so badly,for a relatively lesser connected mangers , we have seen in the past.
As always, thanks for the comments. Anthony, it appears that Ameobi, rather than Revell, is the alternative to Jones doesn’t it. I don’t believe we have enough forwards in our first team squad for it to happen, but Revell would probably be best served by going somewhere on loan – I reckon there would be Championship clubs prepared to sign him. As for defending from the front, Revell is probably the best we have at that, but I suppose when it comes to defending, Jones is very effective (possibly most effective these days) at defending free kicks and corners.
Mike, I tend to agree that I might have been a bit generous about Kenwyne – I always go back to how much we are paying him and U don’t believe the odd very good performance here and there justifies it.
With regard to Declan John, the easy answer to your question is yes, but, to be fair to our manager, it should be qualified by the fact that Declan was injured for the first few weeks of the season. Since he has regained fitness, I would say he is the member of the Under 21 team who has done most to merit a call up to the senior squad, but, there is so little evidence out there under this manager that performances at Under 21 level earn you a promotion to the first team squad.
Russell, my opinion on Russell Slade’s signings is influenced a lot by the fact that he so rarely picks them in the starting eleven for the first team. There is always one of Peltier or Malone in there, but no one else gets much of a look in. You are right that he’s never had the chance to spend the sort of money that Malky and Ole did and so I’d say it’s not fair really to compare his record with theirs, but one of the things which I thought might work out well for us when Slade was appointed was that his knowledge of the lower divisions might see us pick up some cheap, excellent value for money signings – it’s just not happened so far.
I mentioned on the City messageboard I use that I would start putting the replies when I post my blog pieces on there into the Feedback section on here, so here they are for people to read/ignore/answer if they want to.
From “insider”;
“You didn’t go to the game then Bob.
I think Moore deserves a mention he made 3 excellent saves and should keep his place after the international break.”
From “poc”;
“it was a lucky point yesterday , mind you it didnt help playing the first 63 minutes with ten men”
From “Vimana”;
“Indeed, January’s window will be interesting.
It is difficult to work out what VT’s current plan is.”
From “Lawnmower”;
“I actually thought Morrison did well yesterday and that Pilkington was good v Charlton.
However I would agree that it is a worry that Kenwyne seems to be falling out of for
Ameobi offered a lot more and after he came on we actually looked like we might be able to nick all 3 points, although Brighton were much the better side.”
From “Tuerto”;
“Bob, I wasn’t at yesterdays game, although listened on the radio. It seems that Slade has reiterated my feelings on yesterdays performance in the comments you used in your excellent blog piece. I’m not anti Slade, he has turned my opinion on him by settling the squad and seemingly getting players do what they are capable of.
I was at the Hull game, and for what seemed to be a lot of possession on our part, we rarely troubled Hull, even in advanced positions, it seemed like the Hull defence and Bruce almost new what Slade and the players were likely to do, and they dealt with any threat with ease. Hull created two opportunities and scored from them, it was the it looked like we were trying to break a rock with a Toffee hammer and when it was Hull’s turn, they brought out the industrial concrete breaker,used it to it’s capacity, then packed it away and continued with their business. In short, Slade and the players were all too predictable in advanced areas and were snuffed out by an experienced manager and better players.
Another thing I am concerned with is the changing of Jones with Ameobi, and the insistence to lob the ball into channels for Ameobi to chase. It’s very primitive, predictable and I don’t think the way Ameobi plays lends himself to that style, he lacks stamina. I see Ameobi as a player who can drop into midfield and maybe turn players and set up a passage of play, I have my reservations about Ameobi, but throwing long balls over the top of opposing fullbacks in the hope that Ameobi will create something is crude in the extreme, and certainly not playing to his strenghs.”
From “DubaiDai”
“Unfortunately Jones offers virtually nothing and Mason is in desperate need to play alongside a good striker.
This is a key position which will stop us from gaining a league position much above 10-12 (once everything settles down).
Unfortunately the defence will not be able to keep many clean sheets going forward and our inability to punish teams may cause us grief.
Could Idriss come good ?
I won’t hold my breath….”
