  1. Middletown says:

Would you believe that City’s win on that February 1981 night extended their unbeaten run to 21 against the Magpies in league games played in Cardiff. Not only that but after that game City’s all-time home record in league games against Newcastle showed 12 wins, nine draws and no defeats.

This had to be a pivotal game somehow. City lost their next two at home to Newcastle, in October 1981 and October 1982, then lost again today.

    Where has the hoodoo gone?

Thanks for that Middletown, I knew our record against them was good, but not that good!

The second of those defeats was to the Keegan/Waddle/Beardsley team and I believe the 82/83 season was something of a turning point for Newcastle in that it marked the start of a process which saw them become a “super club”, in the early to mid 90’s.

I have been as guilty as anyone else in believing that their relegation last season was some sort of freak, but the truth is that they have spent fourteen years outside of the top flight in the last half century. It’s solely because of what has happened in the last fifteen years or so that everyone is so shocked at what happened to them last May – maybe the City team would not have given them the amount of respect that they did in the opening stages yesterday if they had been given a history lesson beforehand!
