My abiding memory of Lynex Phil came when the team played very well to beat Port Vale (who were promoted that season) 3-0. The game was already won when Lethal was put through one on one with the keeper (might have been Mark Grew?) Lethal did the next bit perfectly as he rounded the keeper and then faced with the empty net, blasted the ball over the bar and into the back of the Canton Stand. God knows what the reaction would have been if it was 0-0 rather than 3-0 a the time, but, once the supporters had taken in what they had just seen, they reacted by singing his name and applauding him all the way back to the half way line - he didn't seem to realise that he was having the piss taking out of him.

Before leaving the subject of Lethal Lynex behind, you are right - he did score against Northampton having found the net in the previous match at Wigan (must admit I had forgotten completely about that goal) and after only netting the once for us in his first season, he became something of a goal machine in his second and last campaign for City by scoring three times - maybe we got rid of him too soon!

Back in those days thought we weren't a "proper" football club - we were in the third tier and I think if even the most loyal supporter was being honest, there was no real expectation of another promotion any time soon. We are now in a position where the national media are beginning to see us as favourites for a top two place - expectations like that mean that we cannot have comedy players in the team any more and, although he was making a contribution towards the end of his time with us and there was a genuine affection towards him from the crowd, Eddie Johnson fell into that category at times during his spell here.

Ah, the legend that was Letal Lynex – you could do an entire article on just him. I was young & naïve at the time (14, I think I was) and I believed him when he said in the Echo following his first goal – “the floodgates will open now” (or words to that effect). He was absolutely dreadful and he knew it. I remember the way he celebrated after scoring against Northampton (if memory serves); last few minutes, he chipped the keeper and he went all Tardelli-esque in front of the Canton Enclosure, and boy, didn’t we love him for it. Nobody missed him when he left though.

Eddie is the biggest cult hero (for similar reasons) since and the Doncaster celebrations must’ve been the loudest Ninian had been all season. But I cannot understand those on the messageboard longing for his return. He was a hero BECAUSE he was so bad, yet people want him back.

Decent enough fella in interviews, etc, but if he ever comes within 5 miles of the training ground again we might aswell put up a sign saying “Abandon hope, all ye who enter here” on the dressing room door.

Thanks Jonathan. I think that pass for the fourth goal offered a foretaste of what we can, hopefully, expect over the next nine months. Koumas was a bit off the pace last night, but there were enough signs to suggest that he can again be a matchwinner at this level.
I wonder of John is a Matt Green type signing we have taken a punt on - he did a few good things and he shouldn't be judged on the last hour or so when he was carrying an injury, but, based on last night, he doesn't look like a first team challenger to me this season and I reckon we are still looking at signing someone like Lee Naylor.
I didn't think we were good enough defensively last season and nothing has happened so far with our centrebacks for me to change my mind - none of them have started the season well as far as I am concerned and I can see Darcy Blake being used there again if we keep on conceding soft goals like last Sunday's and last night's.
I can't say I am convinced by this team so far, but we haven't lost yet and I get the feeling that there is more to come from them so I'm still pretty optimistic about our chances if we can get one or two more in.

A good write up on the match!

I think there are a few positives to take from the game, the glimpses of Koumas' quality are hopefully a sign of things to come from him. If he and Chopra can get on the same wavelength, Chopra is going to get 20+ goals easily this season.

With the midfield being potentially the best its been in a long time in terms of quality & depth (burke, whittingham, drinkwater, koumas, mcphail, olofinjana, wildig, rae & taiwo) the defence does need looking at.

I find it hard to see the logic in signing Martin John. He doesn't appear ready for the first team and lets face it, there must have been (and still are) better options out there. I realise he wont be first choice (McNaughton is likely to be first choice left back now), but if he's not ready, why have him on board?

Hopefully we can get another centre back signed up before the deadline. I think that is one area that we are seriously lacking in terms of quality. Hudson is dodgy at best, Gypes is painfully slow and in y opinion, Gerrard looks unfit and out of his depth.

But any way, a great win (eventually!) and bring on the glamour trip at Peterborough :)

Thanks Royale. Good point about our mood players, I think we have too much talent to get involved in a relegation scrap, but, as I've mentioned before, my fear is that morale is on the floor at the moment and then anything is possible.

"I said on here more than once in the first three months of this year that I thought we had very little chance of making the Play Offs last season".

You were still saying it mid-March!!! [You just knew I'd have to mention it some time - :-) ].

Not unusually I think I agree with most everything you say above, including your conclusion. At the moment I have very low expectation of us reaching the play offs again. Given the number of mood players we depend so much on - (Does that include Dave Jones although he always says not?) - I'm nervous we could end up in a relegation-haunted dog-fight for which past performance suggests we may have little stomach.

I want to thank you, Bob, for continuing to pen your pieces - unlike that petulant scallywag Caliburn. I used to rib you about being long-winded. Today I enjoyed the reading so much I didn't want it to end. The regular dross to which MM's board has descended makes you stand ourt even more.

Thank you for your kind comments Stephen - keeping the blog going through the season has been a labour of love for me really and I get the feeling that there will be plenty for me to write about during the summer as well.
